Trojans built a five-run lead in the first inning and then held off Hawks’s charge for a 7-6 victory on Saturday. Hawks scored five runs in the failed comeback on walks and a single.
Trojans took an early lead in the first inning. Every Trojan put the bat on the ball resulting in 6 runs that inning.
In the top of the second inning, Hawks’s had a big inning driven by walks by Ouellette, McDonald, and Barker and a single by Adair as starter Andrew Mitchell struggled finding the zone. Hawks tied things up at six when Adair singled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs.
Trojans took the lead for good with one run in the third inning. In the third, Mitchell doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring the one run needed for the win.
Mitchell was on the mound for Trojans. He allowed two hits and six runs over one and one-third innings, striking out two. Jack Kurio entered in relief and completed the game decisively for the Trojans.
Logan Rogers toed the rubber for Hawks. He lasted three and two-thirds innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs while walking one. Ouellette and Gage Mahoney entered the game from the bullpen, throwing two innings and one-third of an inning respectively.
Trojans racked up eight hits. Jake Rugley and Mitchell each collected multiple hits for Trojans.
Adair led Hawks with two hits in four at bats.
