Game Recap

Central Texas rainy weather delayed the Trojans v Lobos matchup from Tuesday evening to Saturday afternoon. The Trojans needed to defeat district rivals Lehman Lobos to keep post-season dreams alive. The Trojans came away successful, 3-1.

Joe Deitz leads defense
Joe Deitz leads defense

Joe Deitz, junior RHP, was on the mound for Anderson to face the Lehman Lobos. He had a complete game, facing 26 batters with 8 strike-outs and only 2 walks. Great job, Joe!

The Trojans played strong defense behind Deitz. Ben Caven and Daegun Jung turned two double plays to end the 2nd and the 5th innings. The outfield played extraordinarily well with both James Baran and Sam Mitchell depriving the Lobos extra-base hits with spectacular catches.

On offense, the Trojans varsity’s offense saw its first homerun of the season from sophomore first baseman, Andrew Mitchell. His brother, Sam Mitchell, was on board. The two-run long ball over the right field fence put the Trojans on top, a lead they held through the Lobos’ final at bat.

Tuesday night is the Trojans’ last district game of the 2016 season. They face AISD rivals, the Austin High Maroon at Nelson Field, 7pm. With Austin High moving to 5A next year, this will be the last match up between these neighborhood rivals for the foreseeable future. The Trojan seniors will be honored at this last home game of their high school baseball career. They are hoping it isn’t their last high school game!

Game Recap

Anderson Varsity baseball squad had a busy week with Westlake on Tuesday, Bowie on Friday night and Akins in a Saturday afternoon matchup.

After a close loss to the Bowie Bulldogs, 0-2, on Friday night, the Trojans traveled to Burger Center for their second match up against the Akins Eagles. This game went into extra innings, but Trojans were able to pull out a win in the end.

Coach Prather gave the pitching duties to the LHP sophomore, Peyton Zachry, who was called up to varsity after impressive success against district opponents on the Junior Varsity level this year. After giving up a walk and a few hits in the first inning, which led to the Eagles only run, Zachry settled and finished the regular game. With the score tied 1-1, Peyton started the 8th inning but he was pulled when he reached 100 pitches. Great outing for the young sophomore!

Out of the bullpen for extra innings came another sophomore LHP/outfielder, Ben Kurio. When Ben Kurio took the mound, the Eagles needed one run to finish the game. At one point, bases were loaded with only 1 out! This was high stakes drama. The 2nd out came as the Eagles hit a ground ball toward short where senior Daegun Jung, who has been playing excellent defense, scooped the ball and sent it home to Jake Rugeley for the force out. The third out was a nail-biter as the count went full, a walk would end the game, but Ben Kurio was able to strike the Akins player out swinging. Ben Kurio completed the game. Clutch work, Ben!

Akins pitched senior LHP, Adam Ivy. In 9 innings of work, Ivy recorded 16 strike outs allowing only 4 hits. The reliever for the Eagles in the top of the 10th inning gave the Trojans some hope of putting the bat on the ball, which they did do. Ben Caven’s jammed single up the middle brought home 2 runs. Daegun Jung’s sacrifice fly brought home a third run. Trojans led 4-1 and were able to hold the Eagles in the bottom of the 10th.

Next week’s schedule is packed again. Tuesday, the varsity faces Hays at home. They lost to Hays on the road in extra innings and the Rebels are continuing to win. Friday night is an away game against the Cavs and the Saturday afternoon game is home against the Del Valle Cardinals.

Game Recap

Tuesday night was Little League night at Westlake’s baseball field as Anderson traveled to Westlake for their second encounter with the Chaps this season. With district realignment, this might be the last time these two teams face each other for a while

Westlake gave the pitching job to senior LHP Diego Cruz. The Trojan’s faced him in the two teams’ first matchup this season and that ended in Westlake’s favor. That was not the case this game. The Trojan’s successfully handled Cruz’s delivery, scoring early in the game.

Trojan closer, Sam Clark
Trojan closer, Sam Clark

For the Trojans, Coach Prather gave the ball to junior RHP, Joe Deitz. Deitz held the Chaps for 5-2/3 innings, backed by Trojan defense, before the Chaps started to figure him out. Sam Clark came in for relief in the 6th inning. He was roughed up a bit initially, but then settled down and struck out the side. In the bottom of the 7th, Clark was supported by his outfielders, Jacob Graves and James Baran, with three fly ball outs.

On offense James Baran went 2 for 3. The RBIs came from sophomores Andrew Mitchell, Jake Rugeley and Jack Kurio.

The Trojans are busy this week with two more games. Friday night they play Bowie @Nelson, 7:30pm. This is Anderson’s first Little League night. Any Little Leaguer wearing a uniform can enter Nelson free of charge. The young players will accompany the Trojans on the field for the National Anthem and there will be prizes drawn during the game.

Come cheer on the Trojans in another must win district game.  The Trojan’s are in a 3-way tie for 2nd in District 14-6A, so every game counts!

Game Recap

Due to the weather moving through Central Texas area on Friday, the Trojan Varsity baseball squad had their Friday night game against Austin High Maroon moved to a daytime match-up on Saturday, April 2nd. Saturday was a beautiful day to be at the ballpark. The Trojan’s proved successful, beating the Austin Maroon 3-0. This victory puts the Trojans in strong contention for post-season play.

Coach Prather gave the nod to junior RHP Walker Sigman to manage the defense.

Walker Sigman
Walker Sigman

Sigman’s success on the mound at Toney Burger Center continued; after putting the Bowie Bulldogs in the doghouse last month, he proceeded to de-puff the Austin Maroon on Saturday. The Maroon gained no runs against the Trojans, who played error free defense. Sigman kept Austin High to 4 hits, issued only 2 bases-on-balls while having 5 strike outs. Great job, Walker, on another complete game!

James Baran bunts DaeGun Jung home
James Baran bunts DaeGun Jung home

On offense, the Trojans faced Austin High’s Nick Clawson, senior LHP. His pitching proved masterful keeping the Trojan’s to 3 hits, all from senior Sam Mitchell. To combat Clawson’s pitching, Coach Prather manufactured runs from stolen bases, sacrificial bunts and sacrificial fly balls by James Baran, Zach Blackburn, and Ben Kurio. If Coach Prather was given a FitBit to wear while coaching 3rd base, he would have 10,000 steps during Saturday’s game. Great victory players and coaches!

The Trojans have finished their first-half of the season, 5-3 (11-6-1 overall). Round 2 begins against Westlake on Tuesday @Westlake, 7pm. The Bowie rematch is @Nelson on Friday, 7:30pm, which is also Anderson’s first Little League Night! All Little Leaguers wearing their uniform can enter the game for FREE!

These are both important games for the Trojan’s to win in their pursuit of post-season play. Please come cheer them on!  Visit trojanpride.net/baseball for up to date baseball schedules and information.
