L C Anderson High School
HAYS HIGH SCHOOL—- The Anderson Trojans overcame a slow start to defeat the Hays Rebels 50-47 in Hays.
Wiley Beale scored the lone bucket for the Trojans in the first quarter as the Trojans found themselves in an early 15-2 hole. Anderson stayed patient on offense and focused on forcing stops on the defensive end. Persistence paid off and the Trojans held Hays to 2 points in the second quarter while trimming the Rebel lead to 17-12 going into half. Colin Frame started off the second half with a jumper in the paint but Hays answered by opening up a 28-18 lead. The Trojans clawed back yet again. Trevor McManis made a jumper from the wing that started a 12-2 run to end the quarter tied at 30. The run was fueled by two 3’s from Adam Brutocao, the second of which tied the game at 28. In the fourth quarter, Brutocao picked up right where he left off. He nailed 2 more 3’s and a floater. The Trojans led 50-47 with 20 seconds to play. Colin Frame was fouled and missed the front end of a 1 and 1. Hays secured the rebound and drove down the court looking for a shot. Trevor McManis deflected a pass out of bounds with under 10 seconds to play leaving Hays with one more chance. Coming out of a timeout, Hays needed a 3 to win but McManis deflected another pass and time expired. The Trojans outscored the Rebels 48-32 over the last 3 quarters of the game. Colin Frame had a game high 19 points. Adam Brutocao scored 14 points off the bench.
With the road win, the Trojans improve to 7-3 in district play. They will face the Lake Travis Cavaliers at home on Tuesday. The Trojans defeated the Cavaliers 60-50 at Lake Travis in December.
